Home Cleaning Tricks

Among the numerous preparations that must be taken care of when expecting guests this holiday season is making sure that the house is spic-and-span. Basic dusting and tidying won’t do.  It’s time to partake in deeper cleaning to address the tougher spots, such as corners that are hard to reach and surfaces like stainless steel, where stains are particularly stubborn. Fortunately, there are ingenious ways to clean these areas quickly and rapidly.

Cleaning Showerheads

We use the shower so often that we can become oblivious to the debris that slowly builds up in the showerhead. There is actually a very simple DIY solution to remove it and all you need is baking soda, white vinegar, a plastic bag, and some string to tie the plastic bag around the showerhead. All you must do is mix the baking soda and the vinegar inside the plastic bag first.  Just but be careful to pour the vinegar in slowly because it can otherwise react with the baking soda “explosively”. Then, you place the bag over the showerhead and secure it with the tie, making sure that the showerhead is completely submerged in the mixture. Let it soak overnight or at least for 2-3 hours and then wipe the showerhead clean before using it again.

Getting Rid of Floor Scuffs

Hard flooring is usually susceptible to scuff marks or black streaks left by items that have hard scratchy or rubber bottoms. This can be solved by spraying the floor with WD-40 lubricant. This will not harm the surface and you won’t have to scrub as much. Just be sure to allow open ventilation in the room where you’re cleaning, since the fumes can be toxic. If you are dealing with wood flooring, however, stick to gentle cleaning agents because the wood finish is more delicate.

Cleaning Blinds

You may think that basic dusting is enough, but the truth is that it doesn’t entirely remove all the dust and grime.  So, from time to time, it is a good idea to use a cleaning solution, which is easy to make. Just mix equal parts of vinegar and warm water in a bowl and use an old sock to cover your hand, so you can more easily access the spaces in between the blinds.

There are many cheap, quick, and effective ways to get rid of difficult stains without ruining your belongings.  Use these tips the next time you are cleaning to ensure your home is holiday-ready and guest-friendly.  Happy cleaning!
