Teachers Encouraged to Join Oklahoma City Public Schools

Classes are starting for the 2014-2015 school year. Though a lot of students and teachers are all excited for the first weeks of the new school year, there are still those who are worried about the supply and demand discrepancies of teaching positions.

Teachers are in demand these days because of the shortage in the current number of faculty. Right now, to compensate for the lack of teachers, substitute teachers are being recruited for full-time employment. In addition, there will be more subs who will teach classes.

The Oklahoma City Public Schools (OKCPS) are continuing their efforts in recruiting more teachers not only in the city but also all over the state. According to OKCPS Director of Recruitment Shannon Freeman, many college students are taking teaching degrees, and hence there are fewer graduates pursuing teaching as a profession. This is due to the low starting salary that teachers receive.

Freeman stressed that the legislature can play a major role in helping encourage more teachers. If there is a higher pay for teachers, more will be enticed to pursue the profession.

OKCPS have also launched a social media campaign to entice new teachers. They are also setting a budget to recruit more rather than hiring oversees. The district is recruiting new teachers all over the country.
