Drug Testing Policy Considered by Oklahoma City Public Schools

Teachers, school officials and staff are all in direct contact with students on any given school day. Positions which involve regular interaction with school children require the need to ensure that all students are in safe hands.

One way to ensure safety is to implement strict hiring guidelinesso as to minimize the risk of hiring the wrong person. A drug-testing policy can significantly help in identifying people who may be a risk to the school.

Officials of the Oklahoma City Public Schools are now considering a pre and post-employment drug testing policy for its teachers, staff and administrators. This is an extra precautionimplemented to protect students.

According to officials of the OKCPS, the district does not have a current policy relating to drug-testing, but is considering one. Pre-employment drug testing would not require a union approval while post-employment would need the approval of the unions of teachers, personnel and administrators. The School Board will also need to approve the policy.

The district is implementing a drug policy, starting with bus drivers only. It is also starting background checks for first-time teachers as required by the Federal Law.
