Oklahoma City Raises Awareness for Construction SafetyIt pays to be safe at all times, especially when building a home. Sometimes, home owners may choose to complete new additions to their home instead of hiring a contractor to do the job. While this may be fulfilling, it may also be risky and dangerous.

For this reason, Oklahoma City is raising awareness for construction safety by celebrating the month of May as Building Safety Month. This month, the city will help Oklahomans learn the rules and regulations of construction, from building permits to inspections and more.

According to David Adcock, Oklahoma City Development Center Manager, the city has 46 licensed and certified inspectors who are ensuring that every project conforms to the building standards and codes. They are inspecting both residential and commercial work involved in the building process.

To celebrate Building Safety Month, a free informative event will be held this coming Saturday. Build and Grow will be a public event hosted by Lowes that will provide demonstrations and workshops to families interested in learning more about construction and the rules set by the city. Freebies will be given to kids.

Build and Grow will be held at the Lowes off I-44 and May Avenue from 10am to 11am.

A real estate agent is often viewed as the captain of the ship and acts as the intermediary between you and the other party (seller or buyer). This is very important to the financing process as well because banks and lenders will only finance properties based on their true value, not necessarily what you have offered to pay for the property.

We don’t want to spend a ton of money on something that requires constant repair, cleaning, and upkeep. Rather, we prefer to spend money on things we actually need that do not require a lot of time or money to maintain.

Living in a low-maintenance home is not only cost-effective, but also peaceful and less stressful. You don’t have to worry about if your home essentials will easily break and need repair, nor do you have to be concerned if you skip a day on cleaning your house. To help you achieve a low-maintenance home, here are some useful ideas:

  • Opt for a smaller house. If you do not have a home yet or are planning to buy one, try considering a smaller house. There’s less to clean, which means you save time. Plus, you stick more to the basics of what you need, so you’re less likely to become overloaded with electronic devices and miscellaneous items.
  • Do away with unnecessary things around the house. And, if you come across something that doesn’t work, get rid of it. It will reduce the number of items you have to clean.
  • Choose more durable devices for your home. Durable items are already tested and proven to last for a long time. Even if they cost a little more up front, you can be assured that you will not have to buy a replacement for a long time as opposed to if you buy cheaper materials that break easily and must be replaced.
  • Choose a flooring material based on your lifestyle. This means scratch-resistant flooring if you have pets and darker carpets if you have kids. That way, you don’t have to constantly seal and stain your floor because of marks.
  • Have cabinets and shelves that reach the ceiling and don’t have open spaces. This will reduce the accumulation of dust above your cabinet and around your dishes that would otherwise collect dust.
  • Do not decorate your home excessively. Less decor means fewer things to dust and clean. In addition, it will make your room look less cluttered and cleaner.

Seven Worst Decorating Mistakes

Home decorating is fun and it can bring out the creativity in you. However, keep in mind that even though your home is pretty much a blank slate, it’s important to consider the final outcome and the impression it will give to your guests when making decisions.  You want them to feel comfortable and impressed, not awkward and overwhelmed, right?

Of course, you want to create your own you unique style, but in order to be sure you decorate in a classy, attractive way avoid these seven most common decorating mistakes:

  •  Too many displays. Sure, you have many things you want to show, but that doesn’t mean all of them should be crammed into the forefront. Think of it as a way to reduce clutter inside the house. The less you put on display, the more open and free your house will look.
  • Empty walls. Just because you’re aiming for a clean, open space doesn’t mean you shouldn’t put something on your empty walls. An unfilled wall is simply barren and cold, lacking personality and leaving your house with an empty feel. So, if you decide to go for neat and clean, keep your artwork simple, but definitely incorporate it.
  • Overflowing wall space. What is worse than an empty wall?  A wall that is covered to the max!  You may need to decorate your walls with accent pieces, but don’t overdo it. Too many pieces of art and décor covering every inch of your walls will make them look cluttered and disorganized.
  • Artificial flowers and plants. We get it. Artificial flowers are inexpensive. But, that does not mean you have to risk the beauty of your home to incorporate foliage. If you have a small garden in your backyard, try bringing in a few fresh flowers instead. Or, buy a bouquet of cut flowers at the farmers market.  They may not be a permanent solution, but at least they are fresh and blooming and not sitting collecting dust.
  • Using too many pillows. Aiming for comfort is good, but too much of a good thing can quickly become bad. When you have too many pillows on your bed or your sofa, the question becomes, “Where can I sit?”  If you have to remove the pillows each time you need to sit or lay down, consider downsizing a bit.
  • Using protective plastic covering. Providing some protection to your furniture is a good way to make sure it lasts a long time, but putting protective plastic covers on your furniture is not only uncomfortable, but also a major eye sore. If you want to use a protective covering, use a removable trendy sheet cover that complements your room.
  • Installing the wrong sized wall art. You can’t place a huge painting in a small space. Either it will take up all the space on your wall or it will not fit. On the other hand, hanging a small picture on a very wide empty wall will only look odd. So, if you plan to hang a frame on your wall, carefully consider the sizes you’re working with and measure them first to be sure you’re choosing a good fit for the space.

Home Safety: What to Stock in Your Home

Safety at home is important in order to ensure your family members and loved ones are comfortable and secure inside your home.  Stocking up on the right safety essentials now will make it easier to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations.  There may be unexpected incidences in which fires or injuries occur, but with the proper tools and preparation, you will be able to respond appropriately.

Below are some of the home safety supplies that every household should always have in stock:

Medicine – Be sure that your medicine cabinet is stocked with the medicine basics. There are instances in which a family member may develop a high fever, experience an allergy attack, or respond poorly to certain foods, so you need to be sure you have medicine on hand for these types of common conditions.

Fire Extinguisher – Every house should have a working fire extinguisher in case of fire. Place your fire extinguisher in or near the kitchen, as that is where most house fires start.

First Aid Kit for Humans and Pets – Stock your medicine cabinet with a First Aid kit or supplies, so you’ll have everything you need in case someone gets injured. Also keep pet-specific items on hand in case they experience an injury as well.

Maintenance Tools – Either buy or create a tool kit, so you can make basic repairs immediately without having to schedule an appointment for a repairman to do the work. Even if the damage is too big for you to complete yourself, you can at least seal up damaged walls and roofs or repair damaged windows or doors that inclement weather or burglars do not pose a threat.

Emergency Lights – Keep some sort of emergency lighting, such as candles, matches, battery-operated flashlights, or rechargeable lamps, in each room of your house. This will provide you with a way to maneuver around your house if there is a power outage. If you opt for battery-run flashlights, make sure you keep extra batteries on hand. If you have rechargeable lamps, make sure these are fully charged and working at all times.

Car Emergency Kit – Always have a car emergency kit in your garage and in your car, so whenever you have trouble starting your car or you have a flat tire, you can repair the necessary items quickly.

  • Define the job description and make sure your home helper is clear on the agreement.   Specify which chores need to be done, so they can work steadily and consistently on the things they need to do without wasting time waiting for your every instruction.
  • Give them breaks and be flexible if personal emergencies come up. Home helpers have lives too, and there may be times when unexpected emergencies arise, so be understanding and accommodating because it will create loyalty.
