University Students Recycle Textiles before Summer Vacation

Summer vacation is nearly here! This means that more students will be going home and leaving their old belongings behind. The garbage dump will soon become a new home to furniture, bedding and even old clothes from dormitory rooms.

There is a much better way for these textiles to be put to use rather than throwing them away. The American Textile Recycling Services is once again implementing their recycling program, where university students will have the chance to recycle their own textiles instead of throwing them away.

The company is setting up bright yellow-orange bins in housing units within the two universities in the city, Oklahoma City University and the University of Central Oklahoma. These bins will be used to place any unwanted clothes, bedding and shoes from the students to be reused again as insulation, cleaning rags, stuffing or even sold in second-hand shops. Each bin can hold up to 400 pounds of material.

According to Chief Marketing Officer Debra Stevenson Peganyee, 95 percent of these unwanted clothes and shoes can still be reused. The bins will encourage the students to participate in recycling rather than throwing their unwanted clothes away.

The company will also haul big items not able to fit inside the textile bins for free. They will send trucks to remove large TVs and furniture inside the houses.

Textile bins within UCO will be available through Monday while bins within OCU will be available through May 19.
